The Issues With Not Consuming Adequate Water
Humans have developed an incredible automatic defense system over the past couple million years. All the things that we need for our survival is pretty much on auto pilot. When we are running low on fuel, all we think about is eating. When are low on fluids, we can’t spend more than a couple seconds without thinking about drinking. When something threatens us, we get a sudden burst of energy so that we can either fight, or run away. Despite how amazing these systems are, we also have the capability to ignore them to some degree. And when we do this, it’s usually a bad thing.
When we don’t get enough water, we are in danger of becoming dehydrated. Consistent dehydration can lead to several health problems. To understand how to avoid these, it helps to identify them and figure out we can keep from getting dehydrated in the first place. Believe it or not, if you wait until you are thirsty before you drink anything, you are already behind the curve, and may be doing damage to your body.
Numerous studies have shown again and again that consistent dehydration can significantly decrease the strength of your immune system. This makes it harder for you to fight off germs, which means you’ll get sick more often. And when you do get sick, the symptoms will be worse, and duration will be longer. It’s also worth noting that drinking plenty of water while you are actually sick can decrease the length of your illness. In order to keep your immune system strong, consider drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
Another drawback to not getting enough water is tiredness and feelings of lethargy. When you are under hydrated, your body has to do extra work to do it’s daily tasks. This puts a drain on your energy, making you feel as if you’re not getting enough sleep. In order to increase your energy throughout the day, simply drink a few more glasses of water.
Another danger of not drinking enough water is that you can feel hungry when you’re really not. Without sufficient fluids, the stomach can feel empty. It’s hard to distinguish between the craving for food and an empty stomach that really only needs some water. Eating when you’re not biologically hungry is a primary cause of weight gain.
One final danger of consistent dehydration is that without sufficient fluids flushing through your system, you can build up free radicals over time. These are chemicals that are byproducts of normal metabolism. When you drink enough fluids, they are swept out of your system. But when they start to build up, they can cause a host of health problems.
It’s apparent that not drinking enough water is a source of many problems. By drinking a few glasses of water a day, you can avoid most of these problems and live a much healthier life.
