How To Stay In Shape When You Are Forced To Travel
Having to hit the road in the middle of your fitness program can strip you of all the progress you’ve made. After all, routines are very hard to establish and being forced to leave your routine is a death sentence.
The good news here is that travel doesn’t have to put a dent in your efforts.
So here are 6 strategies for maintaining your physique while on the road:
1. Don’t let more than two weeks go by before exercising: At the very least you need to have a very intense weight lifting session every two weeks to prevent excess muscle loss. Although you will lose cardiovascular conditioning, you will be able to maintain your metabolism.
2. Keep your meal frequency stable: You have to keep on eating every couple of hours no matter what. The only issue here is portion size and carbohydrate intake. If you are going to be very sedentary you have to decrease both caloric intake and carbohydrate intake.
3. Invest in some bands: Heavy duty resistance bands can be really helpful when it comes to long distance workouts. And some of the newer bands are of extremely high quality and can apply a lot of resistance to your muscles.
4. Get a TRX: Suspension training is overhyped and I believe it shouldn’t be the core of your program. However, if you are on the road this can be a good option. After all, suspension trainers are very light weight and very portable.
5. Do total body workouts: You need to work all your big muscles when you are on the road. This is the only way to make sure you don’t lose muscle mass. Otherwise, your metabolism will begin to slow down big time. So do standard movements like presses, rows and squats.
6. Adjust your processes accordingly: If you are tired, fatigued or in an unfamiliar gym environment you need to taper down you intensity level. Use lighter weights, get more rest and slow down the tempo. You want to stay healthy when exercising in unknown environments.
Travel can be a blessing or a curse on your body. So take heed of the advice in this article to make sure your body doesn’t regress when you are on the road!
