Is Your Exercise Program Putting You At Risk For Depression?
Ironically, too much exercise can actually damage you mentally. Anything taking to an extreme is bad for you, and exercise is no exception here.
But things don’t just stay in your mind, unfortunately, because depression will actually change the composition of your body.
So here is how to tell if exercise is making you depressed:
1. Things no longer excite you: Perhaps one of the most revealing signs of depression, when you no longer get excited by things that used to excite you, depression is probably budding. This happens because depression puts on negative blinders within your mind.
2. Your eating patterns change too much: Now any change in a fitness program can alter eating patterns, but the main differentiator here is degree of change. If you notice extreme levels of weight loss or weight gain, depression could be the culprit.
3. Sleeping irregularities: Similar to eating patterns, any alteration in your fitness program can change the way you sleep. The key indicator here is how much of a change you notice. Extreme changes are usually an indication of depression.
4. A slowed down thinking process: Perhaps one of the most crippling aspects of depression is a decreased ability to think quickly. This happens over time because depression negatively affects the thinking centers in your brain.
5. Thoughts of permanent release: If at any time you have thoughts of suicide, make sure to contact a health professional immediately. The problem here is that when someone is severely depressed and sees no light at the end of the tunnel, they think suicide is the only release.
Although exercise is one of the best ways to decrease depression, it can also exacerbate it if done too heavily. So make sure you really watch your mind and body when taking exercise to new levels.
